We offer a selection of fly rods to suit the needs of every angler, from the experienced to the beginner. You are always welcome to come down to our shop and try out any of our rods to help you make your decision.

When choosing a fly rod, first consider where it will be used. For smaller streams and rivers a #5 or #6 is a good weight, in lengths from 8' to 9'. For larger rivers like the Tongariro, or for lakes, then a #7 or #8 is better, in lengths from 9' to 11'.

Next, consider the action of the rod. A fast rod is great for casting long distance and big heavy nymph/indicator rigs, however they can be unforgiving for the inexperienced. Slow action rods are much easier to cast as timing is not as critical, so these are a better option for a first fly rod.

The next important thing to consider is price. All things being equal, a good quality fly rod should last you a long time. It is often worth paying a little more to get a rod that offers a high quality finish, good support and warranty from the manufacturer, and is a possession you will be proud of and take care of for many years to come.
